SAMU’s COVID-19 Update
Due to the growing concern over COVID-19 and its impact to students, the Students’ Association of MacEwan University (SAMU) is making some changes to our upcoming events, programming and services in order to prevent the spread of the virus. We are following recommendations from Alberta Health Services (AHS) by attempting to limit large gatherings of people on campus. Therefore, many of our remaining events this semester will be cancelled or postponed until further notice. Tickets for the Onstage Series will be refunded as soon as possible.
SAMU will continue to operate for, and be available to, students so long as the University remains open. However, in order to limit exposure, SAMU will be modifying our availability for many of our services and altering our scheduled programming. These changes will take effect March 16, and will continue until further notice.
Safe Walk will now only operate out of the Welcome Desk (Building 7).
Peer Support will be available only via phone between the hours of 10 a.m. and 3 p.m., and can be reached at 780-497-5679.
The Pantry will remain open from 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. and will be by appointment only. Clients will be provided with two hampers instead of one.
SAMU’s Executive Committee is working closely with the University to monitor the situation and to plan accordingly. All buildings, including our SAMU building, have enhanced cleaning schedules and frequency. This includes specific cleaning to high-touch points (ie. elevator buttons, handrails, door handles and tables). In hot spot areas (areas that allow for a higher concentration of persons), tables and chairs have been removed or dispersed to conform with AHS recommendations. More changes may be coming to SAMU’s schedule, but we will continue to be as transparent as possible as we make our decisions.
All updates regarding SAMU can be found on our website www.samu.ca/covid19 and all MacEwan updates can be found at www.macewan.ca/coronavirus. Our full list of altered or cancelled programs, services and events can be found at samu.ca/cancelled-or-postponed-samu-events.
