SAFE WALK VOLUNTEERS ARE COMMITTED MACEWAN STUDENTS AND PEERS WORKING TOWARDS A COLLABORATIVE GOAL: A SAFER CAMPUS FOR ALL
Safe Walk is a volunteer-operated, on-call service that assists students walking to their car, the LRT station or their bus stop. Our Volunteers assist students by walking them to their car, transit station, or other nearby destination in the evening, while working to reduce risk and deter crime through frequent campus patrols. Safe Walk is located in the SAMU building (SA-216A).

Service Zones
Safe Walk has two defined zones:
Green Zone:
- Guaranteed coverage; includes all areas of MacEwan University campus and an immediate 5-block radius.
Gold Zone:
- Coverage in this zone is at the volunteers’ discretion, based on availability and safety considerations.

are the safe walk volunteers pre-screened and trained?
Safe Walk Volunteers are fellow MacEwan students who are pre-screened through an interview process to ensure their suitability for the role. Safe Walk Volunteers are trained and dedicated to enhancing campus safety through visibility and support.

is safe walk confidential?
Safe Walk is committed to student safety, and the service emphasizes professionalism and discretion.
When using the service, students are required to provide their exact location on campus (or a mutually agreed-upon meeting point) and their prospective destination. This information is used solely to coordinate the walk and confirm it falls within the Safe Zone Map. Volunteers adhere to confidentiality principles, ensuring your details are handled respectfully.
what are the service boundaries?
Safe Walk operates within two defined zones:

Gold Zone:
- Coverage in this zone is at the volunteers’ discretion, based on availability and safety considerations.

is safe walk open all year round (...even in the cold) ?
Safe Walk operates from Monday to Friday, from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM during the Fall and Winter terms (subject to volunteer availability & safety considerations). **
During extreme cold (-20°C or colder with wind chill), outdoor walks are suspended, and modified indoor patrols or desk services are provided. All pre-booked walks may be canceled in such conditions.
** Please note: Safe Walk is closed on all statutory holidays, reading breaks, and the Spring/Summer terms. For more information or requests outside regular operational periods, please contact sasafewalk@macewan.ca.
For those that need assistance outside of Safe Walk hours please consider contacting one of the following:
- If it is an emergency and/or life is at risk, please call 911.
- If Safe Walk is not operating at the time that you require a walk, SAFE@MacEwan offers a Friend Walk option, where you can utilize the SAFE@MacEwan App to send your location to a friend so they can keep an eye on you until you get to your destination. They can watch you and can trigger a call to emergency services if necessary.
Please Note: SAFE@MacEwan’s Friend Walk feature requires location services and calling functions to be enabled on your cellular device - All information on this page tries to be as accurate as possible, unfortunately, all Safe Walks are dependent on volunteer availability.

- Ask for either the Safe Walk Assistant, or the Student Services Coordinator/Manager, who will assist you in arranging a safe and reliable way home.
