Chief Returning Officer

Governance · Edmonton, Alberta

Job Summary:

The Chief Returning Officer is responsible for ensuring the operation of open, fair, and impartial elections and referendums. Councillor elections occur during the Fall term, while Executive Committee elections occur during the Winter term. Referendums and by-elections occur as needed.

Major Project Areas:

Election and Referenda management

  • Ensures the operation of open, fair, and impartial elections and referenda in accordance with SAMU’s bylaws, policies, and procedures.
  • Supervise ballot count when required.

General Duties

  • Confirm annual election dates.
  • Receive complaints, interpret bylaws, policies, and procedures of SAMU pertinent to the operations of elections, and make judgements binding on SAMU for the implementation of elections.
  • Submit a report subsequent to each election/referendum, reporting the processes used and giving suggestions for future improvements.
  • Provide unbiased information, guidance, and supervision regarding the conduct of all Election, By-election, Referendum, and Plebiscite related functions.

Qualifications

  • Non-member of SAMU.
  • Non-staff of SAMU.
  • Possess strong organization skills.
  • Have excellent communication (written and oral) and interpersonal skills.
  • Have sound judgment, patience, tact, discretion, and attention to detail.
  • Work well without direct supervision.
  • Highly motivated and responsible.
  • Previous elections experience an asset.

Term of Appointment:

Term: May 2022 – April 2023

Honorarium: $1500.00

Hours: as needed

Administrative and Retail Support

Building Operations · Edmonton, Alberta

The Students’ Association of MacEwan University (SAMU), employs several part-time students and full-time staff, who develop and provide award-winning services and programs, ensuring the best possible experience for MacEwan students. The staff work in a unique environment, supporting and providing expertise to student leaders.

SAMU has an opening for part time Administrative and Retail Support within the SAMU Building. The position plays a vital role on the administrative team under the direction of the Administration and Retail Manager and will be working mainly at the SAMU front desk.

The successful applicant requires a cordial manner, excellent organizational skills, great flexibility and the ability to handle multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment. Knowledge and experience performing a variety of clerical, administrative and secretarial duties would be an asset.

Applicants will be proficient in Microsoft Office Suite including Word PowerPoint, and Excel. Excellent oral and written communication skills are also requirements of this position. Employees are expected to arrive on time, give as much notice as possible if absent/late, and follow policies and procedures.

Retail and Administrative Support staff’s duties include:

  • Greet, welcome and direct students and guests
  • Answer, screen and forward incoming phone calls and emails and provide customer support
  • Provide accurate information on SAMU related programs and services
  • Assist with incoming and outgoing mail
  • Assist with photocopying, scanning and faxing
  • Track sign out inventory
  • Assist in booking meetings in the boardrooms
  • Create and edit office forms and compile, update and distribute Staff Contact List.
  • Ensure office supplies are fully stocked.
  • Coordinate and assist with recruitment operations. Set up interviews.
  • Perform POS (Point of Sale) transactions.
  • Assist with advertising agreements and bookings and maintain poster boards around the campus.
  • Assist and maintain external and internal table bookings and prepare table rentals.
  • Assist external parties with SAMU poster board bookings and stamp posters.
  • Support finance in administration of payment for Accounts Payable and Receivable.
  • Complete deposit form and take to bank

The applicant must be available  9 AM – 4 PM from June 16 – Aug 30, and up to 20 hours per week between the hours of 8:30 AM – 4:30 PM Sept 1 – April 30

The applicant must be an active student of MacEwan University.

Office hours:

Monday to Friday: 8:30 AM – 4:30 PM

Start date: Training June 16, 2022

Assistant Editor – the griff

We are looking for three enthusiastic, skilled students to write and edit stories for the griff magazine over the 2022-23 fall and winter terms. After establishing our voice as a monthly, we’re looking to assemble a team that can help take this magazine to the next level – not only in terms of student publications, but also in Canadian journalism.

Summary of Responsibilities

  • Editing and writing feature stories (1,000 to 3,000 words) for print
  • Editing and writing shorter articles for the web
  • Mentoring the griff volunteers
  • Conducting interviews and research
  • Working with a team of six other editors and a large number of volunteers
  • Attending weekly editor and volunteer meetings

Required Skills and Qualifications

  • Strong editing, writing, and mentoring skills
  • Strong understanding of journalism ethics and the field as a whole
  • Desire to write stories about various topics, focused on MacEwan or student interest
  • Knowledge of CP Style
  • Must be able to meet deadlines
  • Educational background in journalism, communications or equivalent experience
  • Skills in photography would be an asset
  • Published writing would be an asset
  • Must be a current MacEwan University student

Terms of Employment

  • Maximum 15 hours/week. Will work around student schedules.

We are looking for an enthusiastic, skilled student to help expand our digital presence and enhance our online personality for the griff magazine over the 2022-23 fall and winter terms. After establishing our voice as a monthly magazine, we’re looking to assemble a team that can help take this publication to the next level – not only in terms of student publications, but also in Canadian journalism.

Summary of Responsibilities

  • Planning and executing social media promotion of magazine and online stories
  • Creating and editing video content for our social media channels and website
  • Planning, recording, and editing digital content including: video interviews and stories, roaming on-campus student video engagement, live social media takeovers or streaming, and podcasts
  • Mentoring the griff volunteers
  • Conducting interviews and research
  • Working with a team of six other editors and a large number of volunteers
  • Attending weekly editor and volunteer meetings

Required Skills and Qualifications

  • Strong editing, writing, and mentoring skills
  • Experience with Adobe Creative Cloud programs or equivalent for video, audio, and photo editing
  • Experience with video and audio recording and being an on-camera personality
  • Desire to create digital content about various topics, focused on MacEwan or student interest
  • Knowledge of CP Style
  • Must be able to meet deadlines
  • Educational background in design, journalism, communications or equivalent experience
  • Published writing/digital content would be an asset
  • Must be a current MacEwan University student

  • Creating graphics and illustrations for stories
  • Laying out stories for print
  • Working with a team of seven other editors and a large number of volunteers
  • Attending weekly meetings

Required Skills and Qualifications

  • Strong design skills in print and web
  • Proficiency in Adobe Creative Cloud programs (Illustrator, InDesign, and Photoshop)
  • Strong understanding of journalism ethics and the field as a whole
  • Must be able to meet deadlines
  • Desire to work on stories about various topics, focused on MacEwan or student interest
  • Educational background in graphic design or equivalent experience
  • Skills in photography would be an asset

  • Updating our social media accounts daily, scheduling posts
  • Mentoring the griff volunteers
  • Working with a team of six other editors and a large number of volunteers
  • Attending weekly editor and volunteer meetings

Required Skills and Qualifications

  • Proficiency in WordPress, Hootsuite, Slack, and the main social media platforms
  • Strong understanding of journalism ethics and the field as a whole
  • Attention to detail; ability to edit for spelling, grammar, punctuation, and clarity
  • Desire to write stories about various topics, focused on MacEwan or student interest
  • Must be able to meet deadlines
  • Educational background in journalism, communications or equivalent experience
  • Skills in photography would be an asset
  • Must be a current MacEwan University student

SAMU Programs aim to provide students with activities and opportunities to learn about wellbeing, as well as raising awareness about various resources available to students, both in and outside the MacEwan community.

Our mission is to provide ongoing and one-off programming with the direct aim to improve the long-term wellbeing of MacEwan students and their community.

SAMU Programs consist of the Student Refugee Program (SRP), StressLess, Sustainability, SAMU Cares, and Artworks. SAMU Programs also runs a variety of other programming and interactive campaigns, blog posts, hands out wellness bags, and organizes activities that fall under two umbrellas of focus – Wellbeing and Community.

Student Refugee Program

Each term, $2.50 of your student fees goes towards supporting SAMU’s Student Refugee Program (SRP). Working with World University Service of Canada (WUSC), SRP funds the tuition and housing of a refugee student for four years. With the help of a local committee group made up of students and staff, SAMU ensures all the sponsored student’s needs are met throughout their time at MacEwan.
