Healthcare benefit fee

SAMU building Levy Fee
The SAMU Building focuses on student space and was voted for by the students in the 2015 referendum. This fee goes directly to paying off the Students’ Association building mortgage, and enables an ongoing hub for students to gather, relax and study.

This fee provides funds to sponsor refugee students’ attendance at MacEwan University.

Student Voice
The Student Voice is amplified by SAMU.
- Advocacy to the different levels of Government and MacEwan University

HOW MUCH ARE MY FEES?
Your base SAMU Fees are $13.50 per credit, maximum $202.50 for the 2024-2025 academic year. This cost does not include additional SAMU fees (Health Care Benefit Fee, Dental Benefit Fee, MyLegalPlan fee, U-Pass Fee, SAMU Building Levy Fee and the Global Education Fee). Your total fees are $647.12, including all additional fees.
Your fees ensure SAMU can offer essential programs and services that give students the support they need and equal chances at success.
You may opt out of some of these fees. Please see below for a complete list of fees you may opt out of.
Fees charged by MacEwan University, including tuition and other fees, will vary greatly depending on your program, status and other factors.

WHERE CAN I FIND A BREAKDOWN AND DESCRIPTION OF MY FEES?
A full breakdown and description of your SAMU fees is available at samu.ca/fees.
A full breakdown and description of your MacEwan fees is available at macewan.ca/fees. MacEwan fees include two main categories:
Tuition: the cost of your academic coursework at MacEwan. All tuition costs go towards supporting academic operations. For more information and a full domestic and international tuition breakdown, visit this page.
Fees: these are costs that are associated with various products or services at MacEwan. For more information and a full breakdown of admission, term and other fees, visit this page.
WHERE CAN I FIND MY TUITION AND FEES?
To find your charges and payments on your student account, go to the Fees tile in myStudentSystem. The Enrollment and Account Summary will provide a breakdown of your charges, payments, and refunds issued for the term.

- Select Fees or Financial Aid
- Click on Enrollment and Account Summary
- Choose the term you wish to see the summary for. A PDF will be generated in a new window.

WHAT SAMU FEES CAN I OPT OUT OF?
You may opt out of the following SAMU fees:
Health Care Benefit Fee: $114.75 per semester, opt out deadline September 30 (Fall term), January 31 (Winter term – new student only)*. The Health Care Benefit Fee covers the cost of providing health benefits, including paramedical, psychologist and social worker services. Dental Benefit Fee: $93.37 per semester, opt out deadline September 30 (Fall term), January 31 (Winter term – new student only)*. The Dental Benefit Fee covers the cost of providing dental benefits, including diagnostic and preventative services, major and minor restoration, endodontics and periodontics and dental accidents. U-Pass Fee: $180. Opt out deadlines September 30 (Fall term), January 31 (Winter term – new student only), May 31 (Spring & Summer term)*. The U-pass is a group discount program that provides MacEwan Students unlimited access to regular transit service in Edmonton, St. Albert, Strathcona County, Fort Saskatchewan, Spruce Grove, Leduc and Beaumont. MyLegalPlan Fee: $18 (per academic year). The MyLegalPlan fee provides access to online legal consultations and helps students cover the cost of legal consultation. Opt out deadline September 30 (Fall term), January 31 (Winter term – new student only)*. Click here for more information and to opt-out of this fee.
* NOTE: Winter & spring term opt-out dates only apply to students who begin their education in those term. Students who start their education in the Fall must opt out by the Fall deadline (the Fall deadline for the 2024-2025 academic year is September 30, 2024).
WHAT ARE MY FEE PAYMENT DEADLINES
Your deadline for fee payment will depend on the semester you are taking courses in. The best way to keep up with your fee payment deadlines is to familiarize yourself with MacEwan’s Academic Schedule*. We recommend bookmarking this page and referring to it if you have questions about fee payment deadlines and other important academic dates.
* NOTE: this schedule is subject to change. Visit it semi-regularly to ensure you know of any important updates for your fees and education.
WHAT HAPPENS IF I DON’T PAY MY FEES ON TIME?
If you fail to pay your fees before the specified deadlines or fail to arrange a payment plan for your fees with Financial Services, you may be subject to interest charges, de-registration in future terms, disallowance of future registration until the fees are paid, withholding evaluation of a new application for admission or denial of other services.
