DISCUSSION PANEL: ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE IN THE CLASSROOM

Join us for a free discussion panel on the use of artificial intelligence in university classrooms! We have put together a panel of MacEwan academic experts and passionate students to share their thoughts about how AI is used at university and what that can mean for the future of higher education.

Meet The Panelists!

Each of our panelists has experience using, studying or researching AI and is excited to share their thoughts with you!

Wednesday Panelists

Moderator: Dr. Paul Sopcak
Coordinator, Student Conduct, Community Standards and Values; Sessional Instructor, Philosophy
Paul Sopcak holds a Ph.D. in Comparative Literature from the University of Alberta in Edmonton, Canada. He currently teaches philosophy at MacEwan University, where he is also responsible for academic integrity and restorative practices. He is an IIRP certified trainer of restorative conference facilitation, associate editor for the journal Scientific Study of Literature and former vice president of the International Society for the Empirical Study of Literature (IGEL). His research interests include the empirical study of literature, phenomenology, and existential philosophy.


Dr. William Schultz
Assistant Professor of Criminology and Sociology, MacEwan University
Will Schultz is an Assistant Professor of Criminology and Sociology at MacEwan. Most of his research focuses on prison conditions in Western Canada, but he also teaches classes on AI, crime, and surveillance (SOCI 324). He is skeptical that generative AI is ever going to deliver on the expansive and expensive promises of the people who benefit financially from the rest of us using it.

Wayne Williams
Assistant Professor of Design, MacEwan University
Wayne Williams, an Assistant Professor in MacEwan’s Design Program and a recent recipient of MacEwan’s Distinguished Teaching Award, focuses his academic work on design theory and pedagogy, knowledge visualization, developing communities of practice, and community-engaged scholarship. By applying design thinking to non-traditional problems and bridging the gap between academic and practical spheres, he emphasizes the importance of a community-focused, visually communicative methodology to address social issues. Through conference presentations and collaborative research, Wayne fosters dialogue within the academic community, enriching both the theoretical and practical dimensions of design and advocating for its role in creating meaningful social change.

Rayanne Haines
Assistant Professor, MacEwan University
RAYANNE HAINES (she/her) is an award-winning hybrid author and pushcart nominated poet, a creative researcher, and a producer and podcaster. Rayanne has penned four poetry collections – The Stories in My Skin (2013), Stained with the Colours of Sunday Morning (Inanna, 2017), Tell The Birds Your Body Is Not A Gun (Frontenac, 2021) which won the 2022 Stephan G. Stephansson, Alberta Literary Award for Poetry as well as being shortlisted for both the BPAA Robert Kroetsch Award for Poetry, and the National ReLit Award for Poetry, and What Kind of Daughter? (Frontenac 2024) a poetry and essay collection exploring grief, identity, and gendered trauma. A previous Writer in Residence for the Edmonton Region Federation of Libraries, she is the President for the League of Canadian Poets and is an Assistant Professor in Arts and Cultural Management at MacEwan University. In her 20+ years in the arts sector, Rayanne has held various leadership and mentorship roles including those with The Edmonton Arts Council, The Banff Centre for the Arts, Stony Plain Records, The Writers Guild of Alberta, and The Edmonton Poetry Festival.  

Rebecca Stiller
Assistant Professor, MacEwan University
Rebecca Stiller is an assistant professor at MacEwan University. She spent over a decade working in child and youth care practice and non-profit leadership. Her research interests focus on arts-based teaching and learning, community education, child and family intervention, and technology integration in social services.

Nathan Poon
Student Panelist, Bachelor of Science, Computer Science Major
Nathan Poon is currently a Computer Science student, the President of the MacEwan University United Nations Club, and the President of the MacEwan University Law Club. He oversaw the 30th Alberta Intercollegiate Model United Nations as Secretary-General and Director, a provincial Model UN conference, which saw universities from around Alberta come together to solve issues pertaining to the rise of Artificial Intelligence (AI), and the ethics of AI.

Thursday Panelists

Tai Munro, PhD
Assistant Professor of Sustainability Studies, MacEwan University
Tai Munro, PhD is an Assistant Professor of Sustainability Studies at MacEwan. She considers herself a cautious optimist regarding artificial intelligence. It’s a tool we need to know how to use, but we cannot ignore the significant sustainability considerations, including environmental and social impacts. Tai is exploring this perspective with students in a course she’s teaching on AI and Sustainability this term.

Calin Anton, PhD, GSEC, GCED, CISSP
Associate Professor of Computer Science, MacEwan University
Calin holds an MSc from the University of Bucharest, Romania and a Ph.D. from the University of Alberta, Canada, both in Computer Science. He has been teaching in different roles at postsecondary institutions for more than 25 years. For the last 15 years, he has taught at MacEwan University in Edmonton, Canada, where he is currently an associate professor of Computer Science. His current interests reside in Computer Security and Artificial Intelligence.

Iain MacPherson
Associate Professor of Communication Studies, MacEwan University
Iain Macpherson is an Associate Professor in the Communication Studies department, which he joined in 2011. His research specialization is in Organizational and/or Intercultural communication, but he has recently branched out into new-media technologies such as VR and AI.

Carmen Keith
Student Panelist, Bachelor of Arts, Political Science Major
Carmen Keith is a fourth year political science student. She has a diploma in Library and Information Technology from MacEwan and currently works in a legislative library. Carmen plans on continuing her studies with a Master of Arts in Policy Studies in the near future.
