DON’T GO TEXTBOOK BROKE

NO TEXTBOOK COST FILTER

There’s no better way to start the year than centering the conversation on student needs!

Say goodbye to hidden textbook costs!

After several years of dedicated advocacy and student-driven campaigning, SAMU is proud to share a major affordability win for MacEwan University students. Starting March 9, students can now activate a “no textbook cost” filter in PeopleSoft. This filter ensures that when you register for courses, you can search for and identify courses that have no required textbook costs.

To access the filter, open the side menu and scroll to the bottom until you see the “no textbook cost” option. Click the small checkbox next to it to activate the filter. Once selected, only classes that do not require a textbook purchase will be displayed.

SAMU has been advocating for a zero textbook cost indicator to be built directly into MacEwan’s course registration system for several years. We know that the cost of education, including the cost of textbooks, is a significant burden for students. As a result, SAMU made it a priority to advocate for a clear, visible way for students to identify courses that do not require paid textbooks. This feature allows students to better factor affordability into their academic planning alongside scheduling, program requirements, and instructor preferences. While this is a welcomed first step in making textbook options affordable for students, we will continue to advocate for the expansion of courses with no textbook cost.
