Commitment

  • One year term: May 1 – April 30. This is a full-time position.
    Elected members are required to take one course in both the Fall and Winter semesters (Course fees covered by SAMU*)
  • Requires mandatory travel, meetings with support staff and other EC team members, Students’ Council meetings and training

How to run for a position on the Executive Committee
  1. Review the Executive Committee positions to determine which interests you. 
  2. Download and complete the nomination package through the link above.
  3. Once completed, submit the required pages through the form above.
  4. Once the nomination deadline has passed and you have been confirmed as a qualified candidate, upload your picture, introductory video, bio, and expenditure report by the noted deadlines.
  5. Prepare your campaign! Campaigning may begin on Monday, March 2, 2026.

Ensure you read the nomination package and it’s contained documents thoroughly. These documents contain important rules for election campaigning, expenditures and conduct. Violation of these rules may result in disqualification of your candidacy.

What positions are available on the Executive Committee

President

The President serves as the official spokesperson for SAMU and the primary contact for SAMU’s legal affairs. They also support the direction, initiatives, and advocacy efforts of other Executive Committee members. The President is the direct point of contact for the MacEwan Board of Governors, as well as faculty and staff associations. 
The President reports to SAMU’s Students’ Council and the Executive Committee while serving on both bodies. The President is knowledgeable on and advises Students’ Council of significant issues impacting the SAMU membership, non-academic university relations, and alumni relations.


Vice President Academic

The Vice President Academic (VPA) provides oversight to SAMU’s role in academic affairs. The VPA is a member of university committees, including General Faculties Council, and acts as the academic liaison to department chairs, deans, and the Provost.

The VPA acts as the academic liaison to department chairs, Deans, and the Provost. The VPA reports to SAMU’s Students’ Council and the Executive Committee while serving on both bodies. The VPA is knowledgeable on and advises Students’ Council and SAMU membership of MacEwan’s academic affairs.

 

Vice President External

The Vice President External (VPE) provides oversight to SAMU’s role in government relations. The VPE is responsible for overseeing the development of the external advocacy priorities for SAMU, while engaging with relevant external stakeholders, including government officials, on matters concerning SAMU and its membership. The VPE also serves as the SAMU representative for all external advocacy organizations SAMU is a member of and works to champion SAMU’s priorities through these organizations.

The VPE reports to SAMU’s Students’ Council and the Executive Committee while serving on both bodies. The VPE is knowledgeable on and advises Students’ Council and SAMU membership on the external affairs of SAMU, including external student advocacy and government lobbying.

Vice President Governance & Finance

The Vice President Governance and Finance (VPGF) provides oversight to the internal governance and financial affairs of SAMU. The Vice President Governance and Finance is the direct contact for internal affairs of SAMU, including MacEwan Student Agreements, financial planning and governance. This position also sits as the second student member on the MacEwan Board of Governors.

The VPGF reports to SAMU’s Students’ Council and the Executive Committee while serving on both bodies. The VPGF is knowledgeable on and advises Students’ Council and SAMU membership of SAMU finances and internal governance operations.

Vice President Student Life

The Vice President Student Life (VPSL) provides oversight to SAMU’s programs and services and SAMU’s role in the non-academic affairs at MacEwan. The VPSL is the direct contact for non-academic affairs of SAMU including SAMU’s programs, services, student groups and events. The VPSL coordinates SAMU’s involvement in MacEwan University’s non-academic affairs including student affairs, campus activities and acts as the liaison regarding the student experience.

The VPSL reports to SAMU’s Students’ Council and the Executive Committee while serving on both bodies. The VPSL is knowledgeable on and advises Students’ Council and SAMU membership of SAMU programs, services, student groups, events and MacEwan’s nonacademic affairs.
