Executive Committee Elections 2024

2024 Executive Committee – Successful Candidates

Gabriel Ambutong - Elected Candidate for President

I’m the current President of the Students’ Association of MacEwan University. I’m running for Re-Election because the work’s not over. Students are struggling now, more than ever, and I intend to fight even harder. We know that affordability continues to be a top priority for students, and I hear you. It’s our job to advocate to MacEwan and the government to support students. During my term, the changes we made led to REAL advocacy wins for students.

  1. $102 Sports and Wellness fee waived for Winter 2024
  2. No increases in SAMU fees for 2024-2025
  3. Scholarships, Awards, and Bursaries increased by $2M
  4. Ponoka Campus students FINALLY getting access to free drinking water
  5. NO increases to Mandatory Non-Instructional Fees (MNIFs) and ONLY a 2% increase in intuition (compared to last year’s 5.5% increase)

Joseph La Torre - Elected Candidate for Vice President Governance and Finance

Hello everyone!

I am campaigning this year to be re-elected for the Vice President Governance and Finance role. Although the role is more internal facing, there are a few initiatives that I would like to focus on and complete. For example, removing barriers to governance involvement, ensuring any student who allocates their time to sit on any committee is compensated adequately, and giving them the necessary support and training. Also, shifting to advocacy being a larger focus in this role, initiatives such as further communication to the university on current student issues and the transparency of the allocation of funds to support students will be a focus if re-elected. Lastly, this year, I, along with the Executive Committee team, was able to waive the Sport & Wellness fee for the winter semester to address student affordability because of our continual advocacy.

Darcy Hoogers - Elected Candidate for Vice President Academic

I’m Darcy Hoogers, a second-year Bachelor of Communications Studies student and Peer Tutor at our Writing Centre. However, I’m no stranger to higher education; I completed a Bachelor of Arts in English at the University of Alberta in 2021.

I’m running to be your VPA because I see and experience the struggles that we—students—must overcome. Tuition, textbook costs, and academic fees continue to rise; we’re expected to accept these costs.

The active, supportive student community at MacEwan and SAMU sets us apart from other institutions. I cherish this community and want to see it thrive.

I aim to implement academic policies that address the current needs of students. These policies range from lowering academic fees to ensuring instructors provide clear expectations for assignments within classes.

As your VPA, I will apply my comprehensive academic experience to work for you. Together, we will develop a stronger community in MacEwan.

Aleace Moom - Appointed Candidate for Vice President Student Life

Hello! My name is Aleace, and I’m your Vice President Student Life for the 2024/2025 academic year. I’m thrilled to have the opportunity to advocate for the supports you need during your university experience. Student life is the foundation of your time here at MacEwan, and it is important to me that students have support systems, activities and campus events that create a vibrant, well-balanced student life outside the classroom. In my time as VPSL, I will advocate for your right to affordability, food security and a campus experience that celebrates diversity, equity and inclusion.

Outside of my work in advocacy, I enjoy music festivals, long walks with my dog and spending time chasing new PRs in the gym. I’m also always looking for the next great restaurant to try, so please give me your recommendations! I love meeting new people, so please say hello if you see me around! I can’t wait to meet you!

Alric Reid - Appointed Candidate for Vice President External

Hi! My name is Alric and I am humbled and honoured to serve as your Vice President External for the 2024/2025 year. I am a first year Bachelor of Arts student who is looking forward to representing your (MacEwan students’) voices and concerns at governmental levels both at the provincial and federal levels in order to enact meaningful change in your best interest.

As a married, mature student with two dependent children, I fully understand the nuances that navigating student life entails, especially navigating transitions, managing heavy workloads and educational affordability. This is why I believe that policies should help students, who aspire to higher education within the Canadian educational system better understand and navigate the system and offer the same level of opportunities to all students regardless of their identities.

My past experience serving in student leadership positions speaks to my passion for service. My penchant for community involvement and for championing the cause of those without opportunities to voice their concerns are springboards on which I intend to launch into this position as I work to enhance advocacy efforts and enhance governmental policies that improve MacEwan’s student experience.

Outside of school, I enjoy spending time with my family, playing sports, working on all aspects of my personal development and giving back to my community.

I look forward to a great year in service to you, my fellow Griffs.
