The SAMU Cares program is a bursary funded by the Students’ Association of MacEwan University (SAMU) for students who are in financial need. The bursaries are to help students and their families with financial assistance in the Fall and Winter terms. The program has grown to assist 60+ families each year and is funded by the creative fundraising efforts of the SAMU community.
We do everything we can to allocate a bursary to every student who applies. Amount of bursary depends on the number of applications and funds available.
Where does the money come from?
SAMU runs a number of initiatives and fundraisers to raise funds for SAMU Cares throughout the year. These include:
- Silent Auctions
- Textbook Buy-back
- Coin Jar Collections (located at the cafeterias and convenience store).
- Donations from the SAMU community

How do I apply?
SAMU will do everything it can to aid anybody who applies for the SAMU Cares program. Applicants can be full- or part-time students, must be SAMU members (paid SAMU fees), and are in financial need. Priority will be given to students with dependents.
To apply, students must be referred by approved staff members from one of the following MacEwan Departments:
- Student Affairs/Wellness and Psychological Services (WPS)
- Office of the University Registrar, Financial Aid
- Access and Disability Resources
- Early Learning at MacEwan Childcare Centre

Fall semester deadline is Nov. 13, 2020 (fall term) and the winter semester deadline is March 12, 2021 (winter term). Applications are due by 4 p.m. on the deadline date.
When can I expect my bursary?
Bursaries will be issued before the end of the fall or winter semesters (depending on when you apply).
