Welcome to Student Group Spotlight!
Every month, we will feature a different student group to demonstrate the many diverse groups we have at MacEwan and how they all contribute to a vibrant, thriving community on our campus.
Meet Spanish student club!
SAMU: Welcome to the Student Group Spotlight. To get started, tell me a little about yourselves, your roles and your positions in this group!
Rosita Conuecar: Hi, I’m Rosita, and I’m the president of the Spanish Student Club! I’m an Accounting major with the Spanish minor. I have a big interest in travel and Latin culture!
Sage Romero: I’m Sage, the treasurer of Spanish Student Club! I’m a fourth year biology student with a minor in Spanish and I’m just interested in getting to know more about my culture — the Latin culture!
SAMU: Tell me more what the Spanish Student Club is all about.
Rosita: The Spanish Student Club is for anyone in the Latin community or anyone interested about it! We celebrate Latin culture and everything associated with it.
Sage: Anybody is welcome. You don’t have to speak Spanish participate in our club!
SAMU: Can you tell me about how this group started?
Rosita: Our group started in Spanish class! Me and Sage have taken Spanish together since last semester. We noticed campus was missing a space for the Latin community. For me personally, I’m Chilean and I haven’t really ever experienced Latin culture so we thought that it would be great to bridge this gap here at MacEwan.
SAMU: What has been your favourite event with Spanish Student Club so far?
Rosita: My favorite event has to be the “Meet the Team” event which we held at the beginning of February. It was our first event ever and we had snacks, music, and had a lot of people show up!
Sage: Mine would be the “Meet the Team” event, too! Since it was our first ever event, we were expecting no more than 30 people but as time went by during our event, more and more people started showing up. It was fun because all these people were coming together and they were getting to know lots of new people! For me, I was getting to know lots of other Hispanic students and other students who were interested in Latin culture.
SAMU: How can students benefit from joining the Spanish Student Club?
Rosita: They can benefit by feeling a sense of community and engaging in things that they enjoy. We plan on doing things like cooking, dancing, and general meetups; there’s something for everyone! I believe that creating a sense of community on campus is such an important part of the university experience.
Sage: It can also be beneficial because a student can participate in our club and learn how much they enjoy Latin culture which can pique their interest and maybe inspire them to study abroad and experience the culture firsthand.
SAMU: How has being involved with a student group improved your university experience?
Rosita: I think for me, it’s been a lot of fun creating a sense of community and getting to know students on a more personal level; it’s really uplifted my spirits here on campus.
Sage: I’m a naturally introverted person but being part of the Spanish Student Club has helped me get out of my shell. I’ve been able to talk to a lot of new people who share the same interests as me!
SAMU: What would you say to someone considering joining a Student Group?
Rosita: I think absolutely everyone should join a student group. It’s a great way to meet like-minded people, get yourself out there, network and fully enjoy the university experience.
Sage: Go for it! If you find a Student Group that interests you, just join. It helps you find a lot of new people who have the same interests as you. Especially in your first year of university, it opens a lot of future doors and you can possibly find lifelong friends there like I have with the Spanish Student Club.
