Black History Month

SAMU is proud to recognize Black History Month by highlighting some of the students who are making impressive contributions and achievements at MacEwan!

Each of the individuals below are pillars of our community and help to create a culture of empowerment for black students on campus.

Maade – 4th Year, Bachelors of Science – Computer Science

Hello, my name is Maade, and I’m a fourth-year computer science student here at MacEwan! Growing up, I have been fortunate to be surrounded by my culture and family, both of which have played a significant role in shaping and supporting who I am today. I am a proud Ghanaian-Canadian, and I’ve had the chance to travel back to Ghana many times over the years.

Through these travels, I have come to appreciate the rich heritage that has been passed down to me, including my Krobo, Ga, and Ashanti backgrounds. Seeing where I come from has filled me with a strong sense of pride, and I love to bask in my culture and the experiences it offers. One way I get to connect with my culture is by learning the language of my parents, Twi, which helps me understand even more of my heritage, which is very important to me. Overall, my background helps me understand my place in the world and where I want to go from here.

Asiya – 1st Year, Bachelors of Science – Nursing

Hello, my name’s Asiya, and as a newly enrolled nursing student, I experience my fair share of firsts–especially coming from such a close-knit high school. First time meeting so many new faces, first time being in a class so large, and first time being in such a specialized program where I can make noticeable steps towards my career. As a future pediatric nurse, I understand the importance of personal development, ethical principles, and empathy in the quality of care a patient receives. Nurses maintain the humanitarian aspect of healthcare, allowing them to pursue rapport with their patients and families.

This connection between provider and recipient nurtures trust and enhances the care system and the recovery process. Creating a safe place, especially for those in hard times. This aligns with what I aspire to be: adept and compassionate to all those seeking care. The following years are sure to be among the most influential, formative, and meaningful experiences, and I intend to make sure of that. Despite growth continuing past graduation, I want to make this time as memorable as possible.

Paige – 2nd Year, Bachelor of Design

Hello, my name is Paige. I grew up in Jamaica so the transition from a warmer and humid climate to colder and dryer climate was like going from one extreme to another. I am grateful for the new experiences living in Canada but I will always miss my home in the sun.

One of my favorite memories is going on weekend trips with my aunts and cousins to the beach or to the river and just relaxing, having fun and eating good food. Those small moments, I long for and, I hope I get to experience again soon    : )
