- One year term: Nov 1 – Oct 31
- Attend one meeting per month (12 scheduled meetings, possible special meetings)
- Attend required training
- Optional: sit on SAMU Committees (committees have their own meeting schedules)

How do you become a Students’ Councillor?
- First, download and complete the nomination package through the link above.
- Once completed, submit the nomination package through the form above.
- Once the nomination deadline has passed and you have been confirmed as a qualified candidate (4:00 PM on September 28th, 2026), upload your picture, introductory video and expenditure report through the corresponding submission forms.
These forms only open after the nomination deadline has passed. - Prepare your campaign! Once you’ve completed the above steps, you may begin your election campaign on October 5th, 2026.
Ensure you read the nomination package and it’s contained documents thoroughly. These documents contain important rules for election campaigning, expenditures and conduct. Violation of these rules may result in disqualification of your candidacy.
fall students’ councillor election
The Fall Councillor Election gives students the opportunity to run for and elect Students’ Council members. Councillors help guide SAMU’s direction by contributing to policies, budgets, and student advocacy throughout the academic year.
winter EXECUTIVE committee election
The Winter Executive Committee Election allows students to run for and elect SAMU’s five Executive Committee members. Executives lead student advocacy, oversee governance, and represent student interests while working with Students’ Council year-round.

What is Students’ Council?
Students’ Council is SAMU’s governing body made up of elected Councillors and Executive Committee members. It makes decisions on policies, budgets, and priorities that impact the student experience at MacEwan.
What is the Executive Committee?
The Executive Committee is a group of five elected students who represent the student body, advocate on key issues, oversee the General Manager, and support the work of Students’ Council.
Who can run in SAMU elections?
Any eligible MacEwan student who meets the nomination requirements can run in either the Fall Councillor Election or Winter Executive Committee Election.
How much time does being a candidate take?
Time commitment varies depending on your role and campaign approach, but candidates should expect to dedicate time during the campaign period to engage with students and attend events.
What support is available for candidates?
SAMU provides information sessions, election guidelines, and resources to help candidates understand the process and run successful campaigns.
What are campaign events?
Campaign events give candidates opportunities to meet students, share their platforms, and answer questions. Events may include Meet the Candidates and other engagement sessions.
Do I need prior experience to run?
No prior experience is required. Students from all backgrounds are encouraged to run and participate in SAMU elections.
