Students’ Council

Students’ Council is the highest governing body within the Students’ Association of MacEwan University. It is comprised of 14 Councillors and five Executive Committee members. Councillor elections are held each Fall term.

Students’ Council approves bylaws, writes the policies that govern the activities of SAMU and also ensure expectations have been met. Essentially, the Students’ Council speaks on behalf of MacEwan students, and helps to make sure your concerns are being addressed and that your university experience is the best it can be.

Students’ Council is moderated by a Chair. The Chair enables orderly and effective meetings to occur by maintaining a neutral and fair perspective. This allows Students’ Council to focus on substantive discussions pertinent to its jurisdiction and business. As such, the appropriate selection, appointment, evaluation, and recognition of a Chair takes place.

The position of Students’ Council Chair is appointed for a term of May-April.

Chair, 2024-2025

JOEHN TORRES

Hey there! I am Joehn Torres, and I am a business student majoring in Management and double minoring in Innovation & Entrepreneurship, and Political Science. Most importantly, I am also one of the student councilor elected by you and your fellow students. I want to emphasize that I may have Councilor in my title, but the most important thing in that title is “Student” in Student Councilor. I am passionate in what I do, and I want to make sure that I represent your interests and concerns to the best of my ability.

LAYAL ZIDAN

Hello everyone!
My name is Layal Zidan, and it’s been almost six years since I immigrated to Canada. Embracing the challenges and benefits of immigrating to Canada has been incredible. I’m a third-year student pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Science, majoring in Chemistry with a minor in Mathematics. I actively engage with the Students’ Council, Audit Committee, Governance Committee, Tour Guide Program, Math & Stats Learning Center, and Centre for Autism Services Alberta. I’m eager to continue collaborating with councillors and fellow students to ensure that our SAMU fees are utilized effectively, to continue enhancing the campus environment, to connect students with SAMU, and to reduce the gap between them. The prospect of representing you on the Students’ Council is an immense honour, and I’m fully committed to understanding and advocating for what’s best for MacEwan students.
If our paths cross, don’t hesitate to say hello!
