How To Propagate Plants

Propagating is a cheap and easy way to (re)grow resources that you consume. This can be done to essentially any plant for an unlimited supply.

What you will need:

  • A plant
  • Scissors
  • A vessel
  • Water
  • Optional: Plant nutrients

STEP 1: Find a plant. For this blog we will be using Basil as an example. Note: Make sure when gathering a plant to propagate, to include a node. A node is a point of attachment of a leaf or twig. Below are arrows pointing towards what nodes look like.

STEP 2: Use your scissors and snip the plant that you want.

STEP 3: Now that you’ve found a plant ready for propagation. Find a cup and fill it up with water. The water should be just enough to cover the ends of the plant.

STEP 4: Depending on the plant, the time for roots to grow will vary. This basil plant took about 2 weeks before roots started to show. Just be sure during the waiting period to make sure you add water or if the water looks murky to replace it. Other than that, this period is just a waiting period.

STEP 5: You’re starting to see a few roots sprout. Make sure to wait a little longer.

STEP 6: Now that your plant’s roots have grown an inch or two. They’re ready to be repotted for unlimited resources.
