Healthy Relationships With Myself

“The relationship with yourself sets the tone for every other relationship you have.”- Robert Holden

Just as the quote stated, your relationship with yourself sets the tone. Being able to take care of ourselves allows us the foundation to care for others. Think of the pitcher analogy: If your pitcher is empty, you will not be able to fill other people’s cups. Similarly, if you cannot take care of yourself, it can make it difficult to take care of others.

What is A Relationship with Yourself?

How you:

  • View
  • Understand
  • Communicate
  • Listen

To your mind, mood, and body’s needs. Essentially it involves awareness, acceptance and care of yourself. When you ignore your own needs, it can have a tremendous impact on your own mental and physical health. Which in turn can affect how best you show up to your other relationships.

Ways In Which You Can Have A Healthy Relationship With Yourself:

Self-Care

Practicing self-care can help build a foundation for a good relationship with yourself. There are many ways to practice self-care and it can look different for everyone. A tip for practicing self-care is just by doing something that you enjoy, or even listening to what your body needs.

Check-in with yourself

This ties in with the self-care portion of listening to what your body needs, thinks, or feels. In this moment try and name them. Working on your own awareness of yourself can improve your own understanding of your being in the current moment.

Think and speak differently about yourself

Awareness of your negative thoughts or ideas about yourself can negatively affect your self-esteem. Think: Would I say this to someone I love? It is important to be self-aware of these thoughts to change their flow. Creating a positive self-thought or separating yourself from negative thoughts can improve your relationship with yourself.
